Quilceda Creek Quilceda Creek is a small, family-owned and operated winery in Snohomish, Wash. Winemaker Paul Golitzin, 36, followed his father’s footsteps into winemaking in 1992. "Paul has been single-minded in pursuit of making one of the finest Cabernet Sauvignons in the world," says his father Alex.
Alex Golitzin, while still working as a chemical engineer for the Scott Paper
Co., made the jump from gifted amateur to commercial winemaker twenty years ago. "Our wine is what it is today because of Paul’s attention to quality, from the vineyard to bottling. He has an exceptional palate and is incredibly innovative in the cellar." Granted, the family winery was a humble, homemade affair — converted milk tanks from nearby dairies, a few rows of barrels. But Golitzin's enormous talent and single-minded dedication to making a world-class, Bordeaux-style cabernet were already apparent.Quilceda Creek has a track record of outstanding Cabernets," writes Wine Spectator in its announcement about the top ranking. "The wines have gotten even better since owner Alex Golitzin passed on the winemaking duties to his son, Paul," the magazine says. "On behalf of the entire Washington state wine industry, we congratulate Quilceda Creek for yet another achievement of the highest ranking in winemaking," said Washington Wine Commission executive director Robin Pollard. "They represent the very essence of why Washington State is the perfect place to produce wine.
Quilceda Creek Winery Quilceda Creek produced 3,400 cases of the award-winning 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon, which was released in the spring of 2006. Much of the Quilceda
Creek’s wine is sold to consumers directly but a limited amount of wine is
available through fine wine shops and restaurants around the country.
Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon, Washington 2003 The 2003 vintage resulted in wines that have stunning aromas, flavors and texture. Violets, black-cherry and blackberry coat the palate, layering complex notes of Vahlrhona chocolate, wood-smoke and Asian spice. This wine will mature nicely over the next 7 to 8 years and continue to age gracefully for at least another 10-20 years.
"As this Cabernet specialist refines its style, the wines are becoming polished and seductive without losing their richly layered flavors. It has gorgeous, focused currant, plum and blackberry fruit, shaded with touches of dusky spice and smoky notes from oak, but it’s almost subliminal to the harmonious, seamless fruit character. The wine glides over the palate, submerging its tannins to let the flavors soar. Best from 2008 through 2020."
