The winery is itself a work of art: not only is Ca’ Marcanda one of Italy’s leading producers of wine, it is an “art object,” an art collection. Tuscany's Maremma area, south of Livorno, is one of Italy's most dynamic wine regions. Ca' Marcanda, the Gaja family's newest wine estate, is located in the famed Bolgheri district in the commune of Castagneto Carducci. Bolgheri's hot summer days, freschened by brisk sea air and cool nights, create an ideal climate for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah vines. The estate is characterized by two distinct soil types - terre brune (dark soil), predominately loam and clay, and terre chiare (white soil), which is richer in limestone and filled with stones and pebbles.
Ca'marcanda Magari 2012
This lush wine, half Merlot with 25% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, is one of the greatest Super Tuscans around. Magari gets its name from a common Italian expression, whose ironic translation means, “if only it were true,” and serves to highlight the joy of its sincerely joyful drinking. Elegant and rich, this ’12 bottling shows the hand of Angelo and the finesse of his daughter, Gaia, who assumes more control in the winemaking every year. Big, rich nose of cherry pie and spices. Richly textured on the palate and full-bodied Lingering finish with notes of fruit, pipe tobacco, and leather. It’s a ripe vintage that offers terrific near-term appeal, while still having the structure for long-term pleasure.
Serve at 19° C. Good with stuffed game, pot roast meat.

Ca'marcanda Promis 2012
Promis, from the Latin abbreviation, promissio, meaning promise truly lives up to its name.
It’s everything you could hope from a Super Tuscan made by Angelo Gaja! The grapes are grown in the terre brune (rich, dark soils) of the Ca'Marcanda vineyard. The soil consists primarily of loam and clay. The climate--hot summer days, freshened by brisk sea air and cool nights--is ideal for the grapes grown here.
A delicious, full-bodied red loaded with ripe fruit, spices, leather and grilled herbs. The wine offers terrific density and richness in an engaging, accessible style with tons of balance and sheer class. This is a gorgeous effort from Angelo Gaja and his team in Bolgheri.
"The 2012 Promis IGT (Merlot, Syrah and a smaller component of Sangiovese) does indeed deliver on its promise of Gaja-inspired winemaking excellence. The wine opens to a dark garnet color with nicely balanced aromas of blackberry, red cherry and kirsch. Soft oak contours of tobacco and dark chocolate widen the wine's aromatic footprint. This is a contemplative and well-executed effort."
