Château Rauzan-Gassies

Château Rauzan-Gassies Rauzan-Gassies began as part of the vast Rauzan estate owned by Pierre de Mesures de Rauzan in the mid-17th century. Over time this estate was divided, and by the time of the 1855 Classification, had been separated into the estates of Rauzan-Gassies, Château Rausan-Ségla, Château Desmirail, and Château Marquis de Terme. In the 1855 classification, Rauzan-Gassies was ranked as a second growth. The wines of Rauzan-Gassies have always enjoyed a certain popularity in England, where they are much sought after, ever since Mr. de Rausan made a trip to London to oversee the sale of his wines himself. The property’s vines are situated entirely in the Margaux and Cantenac districts. The Rauzan-Gassies vineyard is composed of many small parcels located on fossil beds formed by the Garonne river, which provide a complete sampling of soil types which well illustrate the special character of the terroir. The estate was purchased by the Quié family in 1945. The Quié family still retains ownership of the chateau and they continue to make investments that affect the quality of the wines. A new vat house was built in 1992 and was fitted with temperature controlled stainless steel fermenting tanks. The Quié family has also owned other chateaux in Bordeaux including Chateau Croizet-Bages in Pauillac and Chateau Bel-Orme-Tronquoy-de-Lalande.
Château Rauzan-Gassies The vineyards are on terraces and are made of fine, sandy gravel soils. Most of the vineyards surround the chateau with the remainder being comprised of small plots spread throughout the Margaux appellation. Most are to be found bordering Chateau Lascombes, Chateau Palmer and Chateau Margaux. The wines tend to reach maturity at a relatively early age and are often near their peak just a decade after the vintage. In 1992, new stainless-steel vats were installed with a capacity of 4,000 hectoliters. The traditional barrel cellar holds 850 oak casks. In the best years, Chateau Rauzan-Gassies wines can still live for half a century of more.

Château Rauzan-Gassies 2000, Graves, Bordeaux
One of the finest wines made at this estate in many years, the dark ruby/purple-colored 2000 offers up scents of damp earth, underbrush, creosote, camphor, and black cherries. Ripe, long, deep, and medium to full-bodied, with moderately high tannin as well as fine sweetness to balance the structure, this earthy effort will be at it best between 2003-2020.
