Chateau
Léoville Poyferré At the time of the French Revolution, Léoville was the largest wine estate in the Médoc. Following two successive divisions of the estate, three separate properties were created.
In 1826, Hugh Barton purchased a part which he named
Léoville-Barton.
In 1840, the remainder of the estate was divided into two: this was the birth of Léoville Poyferré. The third part became
Léoville-Las-Cases.
When the famous classification of 1855 was drawn up, the three Léoville estates were attributed the title of Second Growth.
Château Léoville Poyferré is a marvelous expression of the quality of its location and soils, as well as the age of the vineyard, planted at least since the 17th century.
In 1920, the Cuvelier family, wine merchants from the department of Nord in France, purchased the château from the Lalande Lawton family. Since 1979, Didier CUVELIER has managed the estate.
The wines of Saint-Julien and those of Château Léoville Poyferré are first distinguished by their considerable aromatic complexity ranging from red fruits, such as cherry, to mushroom for older vintages.
Thanks to its terroir, Léoville Poyferré displays a magnificent balance between alcohol, acidity and tannins. The wine develops a sumptuous velvet quality in addition to plenty of elegance and finesse, altogether with a very great potential for aging.
Chateau Léoville Poyferré
Its 80 hectares of vines are spread on both sides of the D 2 road, planted to red vines on crests of Gironde gravel and wind-driven sand. The slopes ensure efficient natural drainage. The terroir of Saint-Julien possesses ideal climatic and geographical conditions for cultivating vines and producing fine wines. The soil is composed of glacial gravels resting on a limestone plateau which has been greatly broken up due to the action of the Gironde River. This configuration absorbs the rain, rapidly draining it into the ground water. The year 1979 was an important turning point when the estate was firmly taken in hand by Mr. Didier Cuvelier, and new highly successful winemaking facilities built by young, talented Bordeaux architects so that now the wines of Poyferré can age in peace and quiet in barrels of new merrain oak. Great efforts were also made in re-designing the vat-house which is now an advanced model of modern technique without obviating the historic roots of the terroir.

Chateau Léoville Poyferré 2000 St Julien, Bordeaux
Superb. Vivid aromas of crushed blackberries and currants, with mineral undertones. Full-bodied, with big velvety tannins and a long, long finish. This will be a wine to remember. Best ever from this estate.

Chateau Léoville Poyferré 2002 St Julien, Bordeaux
Very big meaty color, fine blackcurrant concentration, big chunky wine, lots of fruit, very ripe, all the elements are there for a good future due to solid ripeness. This blockbuster of depth, complexity and thinness, expresses itself with a superb bouquet of ripe red fruit, smoked hints and liquorice. Its strength is powerful, structured and very elegant. Basically, a perfect wine! Wines Spectator Rating - 89/91
