Chateau
Léoville Las Cases Chateau Leoville Las Cases is one of the largest and oldest classified growths in the Médoc
known since 1707. In 1769 Blaise Antoine Alexandre de Gascq died without heirs and bequeathed the property to four nephews: Jean-Pierre d'Abbadie, Bernard and Jean-Joseph d'Alozier and the head of the family, Marquis de Las Cases Beauvoir. He fled the country during the Revolution but rather than sequestrating the estate, one-quarter was sold to a consortium which ultimately became
Château Léoville-Barton.
The property remained under the ownership of Pierre-Jean de Las Cases, Maréchal de Camps from 1815 and was divided again in 1840, two-thirds remaining with Pierre-Jean to form Château Léoville Las-Cases and the other third to his sister Jeanne de Las-Cases which formed
Château Léoville Poyferré. When the 1855 Classification was completed, all three properties from the original Léoville estate were classed as Second Growths.
The
soil of St Julien is ideal for vines, due to its geographic situation and its
climate ; every element is present to produce wines of exceptional quality and
elegance. Léoville Las Cases's 97 hectares of vineyards are superbly sited on gravelly-clay soils with the largest plot being surrounded by a stone wall and stretching between the village of St-Julien and Château Latour. The wine is a Cabernet Sauvignon dominated blend (65%), and is matured in oak barriques (70-80% new) for 18 months.
Chateau Clos du Marquis
Léoville-Las Cases produces two wines, its grand-vin, and a second wine called Clos du Marquis. Grapes are harvested by hand, crushed and then may be fermented in temerpature controlled wood, concrete, or stainless steel vats of varying size depending on the style of the vintage. Léoville-Las Cases also employs a state of the art reverse osmosis machine to help extract excess water from the grape must in a rainy vintage (Kramer). Use of this machine is considered legal, but highly controversial, and while Léoville-Las Cases is certainly not the only estate to employ such a machine, few other estates admit to their use. After processing and fermentation, the wine is transferred into oak barrels for 18-20 months of aging before being fined with egg whites and bottled. Chateau Léoville-Las Cases was one of the first estates in Bordeaux to introduce a second label, Clos du Marquis.

Chateau Léoville-Las-Cases 2003 St Julien, Bordeaux
Only 54% of the harvest made it into the grand vin. Still a large-scaled, monolithic wine, it will no doubt move up the scale as it sorts itself out and becomes more delineated. Inky/ruby/purple-colored, it possesses the classic Las Cases purity and balance along with layer upon layer of ripe, pure, black cherry and black currant fruit wrapped around a solid core of minerals and subtle oak. Rated 94-96 Robert Parker
