Chateau
Haut Batailley Nearly half a century ago the vineyards of Batailley were divided into two parts: château Batailley and château Haut-Batailley. These two growths are classified “5th crus classés de Pauillac”, with the approval of the Union des crus de la Gironde classés en 1855. Haut-Batailley not only deserves its ranking but goes beyond it, thanks to the zealous care Mr. Borie has always taken over the cultivation and winemaking, just as he has done with the other properties he manages, in particular château Grand-Puy-Lacoste. Located in the very south of the Pauillac appellation, the property shares a similar climate to that enjoyed by the Médoc: maritime, with the Gironde estuary and the Bay of Biscay combining to act as a climate regulator. The estate has no Chateau building. The wines are now made by the owners of
Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou who are cousins.
Chateau
Haut Batailley The vineyards (Cabernet Sauvignon 65%; Merlot 25%; Cabernet Franc 10%) lie on deep gravel beds over limestone. Grapes are hand-picked, destemmed and fermented in stainless steel tanks before being transferred to oak barrels for 16 to 20 months (30% to 40% new oak depending on the vintage.) There is a light filtration before bottling. Vinification includes up to 20 months' wood ageing, 40% new. It is classified as a 5ème cru classé.

Chateau Haut Batailley 2002 - Bordeaux France
A muted nose with earth, tobacco and rust. Quite high in acidity on the palate, which again is quite savoury. But it has good weight and focus though coarse on the finish. A rustic Haut-Batailley. A solid core of fruit in this wine, with medium to full body, good tannins and a medium finish.

Chateau Haut Batailley 2003 - Bordeaux France
An unusually fleshy, exotic Haut-Batailley, the 2003 possesses loads of blackberry and currant fruit, low acidity, and a surprisingly succulent mouthfeel as well as texture. It will provide delicious drinking during its first 10-12 years of life. This is a sexy Pauillac for near-term drinking.
