Chateau
Grand-Puy-Lacoste Grand-Puy-Lacoste dates back as early as 1743 when it was known to be surrounded by a few rows of vines. Lawyers and parliamentarians succeeded one another at the had of what was one of the first vineyards to develop.
Records of the property date back to the 15th century when it belonged to Monsieur de Guiraud whose descendant married Monsieur Saint Guirons, a name that adorned the label long after he himself had passed into the pages of history. One of his daughters married "Françoise Lacoste" in the latter part of the 18th century and he duly appended his name to the Château name.
In 1978, Raymond Dupin, who had a reputation of being one of Bordeaux's greatest gourmets, sold the Château to Jean-Eugéne Borie, owner of
Ducru-Beaucaillou. The Château has been run since then by Jean-Eugéne's son Xavier. Xavier began a remodeling program which completely modernized the ancient and dilapidated cellars. The resurgence of Grand-Puy-Lacoste to the forefront of leading Pauillacs expected to take several years was immediately apparent with Xavier's first vintage at the Château.
The traditional vinification
is carried out in oak vats followed by aging in new or nearly new barrels. Time
spent in barrels is 18 to 20 months.
Grand-Puy-Lacoste's 90 hectares of vines (Cabernet Sauvignon 75%, Merlot 25%) are in one block surrounding the substantial 19th century château and lie on deep gravel beds over limestone. The grapes are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats and the wine is then matured in oak barriques (50% new) for 18 months.
A concentrated wine of good color, Grand-Puy-Lacoste has enjoyed a solid reputation for big, durable full-bodied Pauillacs.
Château Grand Puy Lacoste
Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste produces about 12,000 cases of wine in an average year. At its best the wine displays the hallmark Pauillac character of black currants and cedar balanced by a formidable tannic structure. Top vintages include 1995, 1996, 2000,
2002 and 2003.

Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste 2000 - Pauillac - Bordeaux
This is good wine with soft tannins, but it lacks the elegance that we’d expect to find, and has a touch of green pepper that is the mark of slightly unripe cabernet. Cassis and berry aromas, with hints of fresh herbs. Medium- to full-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a medium finish. Wines Spectator Rating -
85/89
