Pessac Léognan, Graves,

Chateau
de Fieuzal Chateau de Fieuzal was included in the
1959 Graves classification, before the creation of the Pessac-Léognan
appellation in 1987. It was included for its red wine, but the white also has an
excellent reputation, mainly due to the work of Gérard Gribelin, who was owner
and then administrator from 1974 to 2001. Produced in a considerably smaller
quantity then the red - 2500 cases versus 10000 - it also fetches a considerably
higher price.
Ch.de Fieuzal epitomises Pessac Leognan's success in this curious vintage.
Whilst elegant, it is also rich and concentrated with flavours of spice,
currants and hints of liquorice. At the beginning of the century, Fieuzal was served at the Pope's table.
Chateau
de Fieuzal De Fieuzal was bought by Swedish-born
Erik Bocké after the end of the war and he was responsible for building up the
Château's reputation which culminated in it being classified as a Graves Cru
Classé in 1959. There are 48 hectares of vineyards lying around the chateau, on gravelly-sandy soils. Most are planted with red varieties - predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and then Merlot, with small quantities of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot - but about a fifth are planted up with equal quantities of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. The average vine age is thirty years. Harvesting is manual with careful selection on a sorting table, followed by temperature controlled fermentation with regular batonnage.
Erik Bocké son-in-law Gérard Gribelin took over in 1974 and further modernised the
property by installing stainless steel fermentation tanks and by raising the
proportion of new barrels used in the maturation process.

Chateau Fieuzal 2000 Pessac-Léognan, Bordeaux France
The earthy, dense purple-colored 2000 is narrowly constructed, but it
exhibits pure, smoky, black currant and cherry fruit, mineral, and new oak
aromas. Medium-bodied, with sweet tannin, and a well-defined, structured
personality and finish, it will be at its peak between 2003-2015. Rated
89-91 Robert Parker

The Graves' vineyards bear a close resemblance to the Médoc and the gravelly soil (hence the name) is also much the same. Higher percentage of Merlot.
