Château Cos
d'Estournel, acknowledged to be the most outstanding cru of St Estephe, is certainly the most spectacular edifice to grace the commune's vineyards.
Surprisingly not a residence but a chais, its oriental facade is adorned with three pagoda turrets, all cast in a soft golden sandstone. The word "Cos" derives from Gascogne tongue, meaning "hill of pebbles" whilst its appendage is down to Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel who was born in 1753 and lived to the ripe old age of 91, passing away just two years before his beloved estate was classified as a Second Growth. Overlooking the border between Pauillac and St Estephe, and the vineyards of Lafite-Rothschild, from the crest of its gravellous slope, this rather fantastic piece of architecture is a fitting monument to its wines.

Since the late eighteenth century, grapes from old vines have been used to produce the fine Classified Grands Crus wines of the Médoc.
Grapes from the younger vines are blended together to make a "Deuxième Vin" (or, in English, Second Wine).
"Les Pagodes de Cos" is a Cos d'Estournel "Second Wine" in the strict sense of the term. The same vines will, in a few years time, be producing the grapes for the "Grand Vin" classified in 1855 as a Grand Cru.

Chateau Cos d'Estournel 2000 Exceptional
Jean-Guillaume Prats was not sure whether or not a small lot of
Cabernet Franc would be added to the blend I tasted. Made from yields of 40-42
hectoliters per hectare, it presently is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and
the rest Merlot. A dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by scents of green
peppers, spice, cedar, and minerals. The aromatics suggest considerable
complexity as this wine ages, but the austere, earthy, tannic, compressed style
is not for everybody. Medium-bodied and beautifully pure
Price: $123.03 Won't Last long.

Chateau Cos d'Estournel 2000 Bordeaux France
A dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by scents of green peppers,
spice, cedar, and minerals. The aromatics suggest considerable complexity
as this wine ages, but the austere, earthy, tannic, compressed style is
not for everybody. Medium-bodied and beautifully pure, this 2000 may
always remain somewhat on the tough side because of an austere, abundantly
tannic finish. Score range: 95-100 Wine Spectator
