Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855
The Gironde Chamber of Commerce requested that a classification system be devised to accompany their display of the fine wines of Bordeaux
at the 1855 Exposition Universelle in Paris. The Bordeaux Wine Brokers' Union went to work on the project and came up with what we now refer to as the Classification of 1855. The Châteaux were classified mainly through the prices that the
respective wines were selling for and the classification was never intended to
be an official measure of quality. Since 1855, many changes have occurred in the chateaux's names, owners, vineyards and wine quality, and because of divisions in the original estates, there are now 61 chateaux on the list. But if an estate can trace its lineage to the classification, it retains its claim to cru classé status. With the exception of the elevation of Mouton
Rothschild to Premier Cru Classé in 1973, the list remains unchanged today. |
