Bordeaux
Wine 2002 Vintage
|
|
|
|
The 2002 Bordeaux growing season started out a little scary. The winter was very cold and a lot drier than many years in recent memory, bringing with it about half as much rain as expected. This lack of rainfall continued into the spring, though temperatures warmed to allow the vines to grow. June, however, brought with it cool and humid weather that interfered with the flowing of many vines, and the summer that followed was not as sunny as one might hope for given the cool start to the season. |

Chateau Beychevelle 2002 Bordeaux
Very attractive aromas of blackberry and minerals. Medium-bodied, with
fine tannins and a light finish. Wines Spectator Rating - 85/89
Quite good color, but should be deeper, pleasant Cabernet nose, but too
much greenness on the fruit and not much length, some elegance but little
depth. Decanter Magazine Rating: 2 stars

Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou 2002 Bordeaux
Very attractive aromas of fresh berries, raspberries and cherries.
Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a medium, refined finish. Lots of
finesse. Wines Spectator Rating - 89/91
Another of the top wines of the year, this has good, ripely sweet cassis
fruit and tannins that are just ripe enough. There is good concentration
here, but none of the jammy character that marks some other 2002s. Wine
Magazine Rating: 89-93

Château Giscours 2002, Margaux, Bordeaux
A lovely, dense deep ruby-purple color. An elegant nose showing layers of intermingling spice and fruit aromas, such as blackberries, blackcurrants and a suggestion of roses. A supple entry on the palate, followed by finesse and lingering tannins. Loads of currants and minerals on the nose. Full-bodied, with medium, fine tannins and a medium finish. Very well done.

Chateau Haut Batailley 2002 - Bordeaux France
A muted nose with earth, tobacco and rust. Quite high in acidity on the palate, which again is quite savoury. But it has good weight and focus though coarse on the finish. A rustic Haut-Batailley. A solid core of fruit in this wine, with medium to full body, good tannins and a medium finish.
Wines Spectator Rating - 89/91

Chateau Lynch Bages, 2002 Pauillac, Bordeaux
Fantastic aromas of ripe currants, spices, cedar and incense. Full-bodied, with soft and velvety tannins and a long, currant and mineral finish. Serious for the vintage. Big meaty, well-extracted color, quite floral and very blackcurrant showing very ripe Cabernet fruit and very good depth, ripe and plummy with excellent length and balance. Wines Spectator Rating - 92/94

Chateau Montrose 2002 Bordeaux France
Very deep color, packed with well-extracted fruit, very good ripe Cabernet, but rather solid and chunky and almost over-ripe. At upper end of 3 stars. Powerful yet surprisingly accessible, this terrific example of Montrose should be drinkable at a young age. Wines Spectator Rating - 89/91

Chateau Petrus 2002 Pomerol Bordeaux France
A relatively strong effort for this vintage, but hardly one of the
profound examples of Petrus, this wine exhibits a dark plum color and a
somewhat monolithic, foursquare personality with notes of plums, black
cherries, licorice, and some herbs and damp earth. Medium-bodied,
muscular, and tannic, but lacking some charm and sweetness, it should
age nicely for 12-15 more years and possibly be even better than my
score. Readers who buy it should not even attempt opening a bottle for
at least 4-5 years. Rated 90, Robert Parker

Chateau Pichon Lalande 2002 - Pauillac, Bordeaux
One of the best wines of the vintage, this is a classic Pauillac that is a
blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 6%
Petit Verdot. Dense ruby/purple in color with a glorious nose of melted
licorice, lavender, barbecue smoke, black currants, and graphite, the
wine is tannic, classically structured with an opaque ruby/purple color,
beautiful definition, and a 1996-ish personality. This deep,
full-bodied, elegant yet powerful 2002 should age handsomely for over
two decades. Some patience will be required since this vintage exhibits
more muscle and virility than normal. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025.
Rated 94, Robert Parker

For the 1855 Exposition Universelle de Paris, Emperor Napoleon III requested a classification system for France's best Bordeaux wines which were to be on display for visitors from around the world. Brokers from the wine industry ranked the wines according to a château's reputation and trading price, which at that time was directly related to quality. The result was the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. |
