Ausone
The vineyards of Saint Emilion have been immortalized in Roman mosaics and praised by the Roman poet Ausonius.
He is frequently cited by historians of winemaking, as his works give early evidence of large-scale viniculture in the now-famous wine country around his native Bordeaux. Ausone draws from its clayey and chalky ground, its micro climate and its exposition East / South-East on the mountainsides of Saint-Emilion. In 1958 the wines of Saint Emilion were first officially classified under a complex and rather confusing system. The very best vineyards enjoy the status of Premiers Grands Crus Classés A and B and are re-evaluated every decade.
Chateau Ausone produces on average 2,000 cases per year and is classified as a
"First Grand Cru Classé, A" along with Cheval Blanc.

Located in the center of the Saint
Emilion appellation, due south of Saint Emilion town, its vineyards (Merlot 50%, Cabernet Franc 50%) flourish on a steep, south-east facing slope protecting them from cold north winds & westerly rain. Those vines at the top of the slope thrive on limestone (the
"Saint Emilion plateau") whilst those further down benefit from a clay/loam
topsoil (the "Côtes"). The modern era can be traced back to one Jean Cantenat whose family owned the land since the early 1700's though it was the Lafargue family who consolidated Ausone's reputation. Everything bottled at Ausone by the family Vauthier, a bit less than 20,000 bottles, is stamped by the only seal of quality. This Property has undergone a mini revival recently and now with the ubiquitous Michel Roland as consultant is producing ultra rich lush exotically fruity wines that require a minimum 10 years bottle ageing.
