Richard A. “Dick” Vermeil two great-grandfathers, Jean Louis Vermeil, brought the family name to San Francisco, and Garibaldi Iaccheri, the person responsible
introduced the Vermeils to Calistoga and the Napa Valley. Dick Vermeil. Vermeil was raised in Napa Valley and his initial dive into the wine world is impressive. It goes against the rule-of-thumb that celebrities rarely achieve anything special in the world of wine.
Vermeil XXXIV Red Wine 2009
This offering is an extraordinary dark purple-blue-black wine. Breathe in deep for the captivating aromas of ripe plums with a hint of green olive and crushed black pepper. The spell continues with a long, grippy finish. This wine is wonderful now, and if you can muster the patience to wait through a couple years of cellaring, you will be rewarded with a mature smoothness that you will absolutely love. Vermeil Zinfandel Frediani Vineyard 2010
Before “Dick” Vermeil crushed his first commercial grape, he reached an agreement with Jeanne and Jimmy Frediani allowing
him a portion of this incredible block each vintage. As with their neighboring Luvisi 1908 block,
he refuse to use nebulous terms like “Old Vine” and “Ancient Vine.” Rather, this Zinfandel is from a block which was 54 years old when this wine was crushed. Though
he call it our “young” Zinfandel, dry-farming continues to produce the depth and character of Zinfandel vines in balance with their environment. Broad, fleshy and bright, this Frediani Zinfandel is fat with soft tannins. It seems to be generally preferred over its Luvisi first cousin by those who enjoy their Zinfandel with a couple years cellaring.
