The history of Orin Swift Cellars dates back to 1995 when on a lark, David Swift Phinney took a friend up on an offer and went to Florence, Italy to spend a semester “studying”. During that time, he was introduced to wine, how it was made, and got hooked. A few more years of university led to graduation and eventually a job at Robert Mondavi Winery in 1997 as a temporary harvest worker. Deciding that if he was going to work this hard, it would eventually have to be for himself, so in 1998 he founded Orin Swift Cellars. When The Prisoner Wine Co took ownership of The Prisoner and Saldo labels in 2009 from Orin Swift, they knew that assembling the right team would be essential.
Orin Swift Abstract California Red Wine 2012
After thirteen years spent mastering the art of blending through his work with The Prisoner, Dave Phinney has moved onto a new chapter at his winery, Orin Swift Cellars, and felt driven to continue this practice with ABSTRACT. Abstract is a blend of Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino Grenache, Petite Sirah,
and Syrah primarily from hillside vineyards. Sourced from a collage of vineyards
all over California, almost as varied as the Abstract label. Inky blue-purple in complexion, the wine bursts with a perfume of dark fruit, sage, acacia flowers, kirsch, and a hint of California chaparral. Voluptuous in texture, the wine is remarkably fresh on the palate with ripe blackberry, mulberry, roasted plum, black tea, and bitter chocolate. A sweet and soft tannin profile rounds out the finish, which lingers elegantly.

Orin Swift Cellars the Prisoner 2013
The Prisoner is an innovative red blend that takes its stylistic cue from the drinkable “mixed blacks” first made by Italian immigrants who originally settled the Napa Valley. In the late 90’s there were a handful of Napa producers beginning to make this style of wine again. The blend soon began to incorporate not only Zinfandel, but also Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Charbono, and Grenache.
The wine has a dense red and black hue that is framed in vibrant crimson. Aromas of Bing cherry, espresso, roasted fig and vanillin oak accents are persistent. The entry is powerful and generous supported with lively acidity while flavors of ripe raspberry, pomegranate and wild berry fruit linger harmoniously. Soft, integrated tannin chains allow the wine to be approachable now and provides for a pleasant finish.

Orin Swift Veladora Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley 2012
Veladora is not only a wine, but an annual recognition of the Latino farm working community in the Napa Valley. Sourced from the Tofanelli Vineyard, this is a full-throttle California-style Sauvignon Blanc! A touch of Semillon (a classic white Bordeax varietal) is blended with the Sauvignon Blanc to give it body – the resulting wine bursts out of the glass with heaps of apricot, lychee fruit, boronia flowers, passion fruit and flint. Layers of white peach, mineral liqueur, and lime oil complement a rich mouthfull of lingering honey which lends itself to a lusciously long expressive finish.

Orin Swift Papillon Red Blend 2012
From the creator of "The Prisoner", Papillon is a full and rich Cabernet Sauvignon blend. The fruit originates from some of Napa Valley's most celebrated appellations including Howell Mountain, Saint Helena, Rutherford, and Oakville. A vibrant crimson is present in the glass with a claret fringe on the rim. Luring aromas of currants, mulled blackberries, French vanilla, and exotic spices serve as an intriguing precursor to tasting. The opening is dense and powerful with extracted blue and red fruit flavors which leads to beguiling cassis, plum, and a hint of mocha later. The tannins are already so soft and suave which lends to early appeal and cellaring if one so chooses. Papillon takes flight upon release with aging potential up to 8 years.
