Kosta Browne
Kosta Browne began as a dream shared by Dan Kosta and Michael Browne. In the summer of 1997, while working at John Ash & Co. restaurant in Santa Rosa, California, Dan and Michael decided to venture into winemaking. They saved tip money for two months and eventually had enough to buy a half ton of Pinot Noir, a used barrel and an old hand-crank stemmer-crusher, a purchase that marks the beginning of Kosta Browne. Since that vintage, they have nurtured relationships with the best growers and honed their winemaking skills, making sure to focus on the vision and values with which they began.
WINEMAKER & CHEF BIOS
DAN KOSTA :
Kosta Browne Owner - Dan Kosta is a native of Sonoma County.
As a child, Dan ran through his father’s wine shop, quickly gaining an appreciation and love for fine wine. Later, Dan worked for more than 15 years in fine dining with the majority of his experience gained at John Ash & Co. in Santa Rosa, California. Dan worked every position imaginable at the restaurant, finally landing as Wine Director and Head Sommelier.
Today, Dan is the Owner for Kosta Browne. This does not mean he gets out of working crush, bottling days and dipping a few thousand bottles in wax when needed. We are a two-man show when it comes to production so Dan definitely gets his hands dirty.
MICHAEL BROWNE :
Michael Browne is the Winemaker for Kosta Browne.
He moved to Sonoma County in 1987 from Washington State with the goal of becoming an architect. While working at local fine dining establishments to pay the bills, he fell in love with the pleasures of the local wines and was intrigued by winemaking and viticulture through his many visits to local wineries and vineyards. The idea of being involved in agriculture as well as the craft of winemaking pushed Michael into the pursuit of producing fine wines.
ED KURTZMAN :
August West Winemaker
Ed Kurtzman has been making Pinot Noir since 1994 where he got his start in the cellar at Bernardus in Carmel Valley, California under the guidance of Don Blackburn and Kirby Anderson. From 1995 through 1998 Ed moved across Monterey County to Chalone Vineyard where he was enologist and then assistant winemaker under Michael Michaud.
Ed had the good fortune of meeting future August West partners Gary Franscioni and Howard Graham while he was winemaker at Testarossa for the vintages 1999-2002.
Winemaking at Kosta Browne Flavorful, intense wines - that is
Kosta Browne goal. They believe every wine should be bursting with flavor. This intensity should be part of a greater balance.
They find that each of their vineyards has its own "sweet spot" of balance. It is our charge to guide each vineyard to its optimum flavor potential.
Kosta Browne single vineyard wines are blended to express the specific qualities and consistencies of
their pedigreed vineyards. Pinot Noir is the perfect palate to define the terroir of these plantings.
Kosta Browne 2004 Vintage Pinot Noir - Russian River Valley
Kosta Browne 2004 Russian River Pinot Noir is a blend of four vineyards; Cohn, Koplen, Amber Ridge and Bly. All of these vineyards lie in the middle to northern Russian River Valley. The style is deep and rich with a velvety texture that is prominent from start to finish. Kosta Browne recommend cellaring this wine until 2007 with additional cellar time being beneficial.
