are focusing on wines from Monterey, including popular selections from the well-known Sanctuary vineyard in the Arroyo Seco district. All of Jekel's wines are made exclusively from grapes grown in Jekel's vineyards and are bottled on the premises. Coarse, gravelly soils ... stratified silts. Sand and stone. These are the handiwork of the Arroyo Seco River that wound its way through the Salinas Valley eons ago. Today, those rocky soils provide excellent drainage for Jekel's 440 acres of vineyards that sit on the sloping alluvial fan created by the river.
Jekel Cabernet Sauvignon
The Arroyo Seco influence can easily be seen in this Bordeaux-style Cabernet Sauvignon, which offers a deep garnet color and recognizable aromas of plum, dark fruits and black cherry mingled with spice from the one-third of new oak barrels used in aging. This substantial wine is medium to full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a lingering finish. In the glass, flavors of ripe fruit compete with classic Cabernet touches of forest floor, cocoa and a pleasant earthiness. Traditional components such as Petite Verdot and Malbec bring deep color, texture and greater interest to the wine. Sanctuary has been a signature vineyard for Jekel for many years, and this Jekel Cabernet will continue to improve and evolve in the bottle for three to seven years.

It, Now! l
A tart, young, lean and concentrated wine, with sharply focused pear and
pineapple flavors that gain elegance and finesse on the finish, with very fine
balance, crisp acidity and long fruity flavors on the aftertaste. These are quite literally, the "rocky" beginnings of each Jekel wine. Here, the coarse soils force the plants to grow deep roots, which help produce intensely flavored grapes. The soil are complemented by the unique micro-climate of the Arroyo Seco Valley. Cooling marine winds from the Monterey Bay extend the harvest and allow the grapes to ripen slowly and fully for more complex flavors and greater retention of natural fruit acids. Because of the cool climate, rainfall and well drained soils, grapes have been grown in this region for more then 200 years. Jekel has been growing premium wine grapes in this valley since 1972 and producing wine here since 1978 when the winery was completed.
