Caymus
Vineyards
The Wagner family began as farmers in 1906, and Charles J (Chuck), bonded the winery in 1971.
The first commercial crush was in 1972. The modest, low-frills winery is named after the Caymus Indians.
The Caymus family produces complex wines with great style and a voluptuous texture.
Even if Rosé and Sauvignon Blanc are produced at Caymus, Cabernet Sauvignon has always been king.
Since its founding in 1972, Caymus Vineyards has focused its
attention on Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley. Charles F. (Charlie) Wagner,
his wife Lorna B. Wagner and their son Charles J. (Chuck) Wagner had built their
winery among the vines planted on the family's ranch in Rutherford, a district
long recognized for producing high quality Cabernet Sauvignons. The Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon is marvelously well-balanced, with the fruit
already soaking up the new oak. Rich, full-bodied, marvelously concentrated, and
silky smooth.

Caymus Conumdrum
After experimenting with 11 different white wine grapes, we chose the
three that we considered the key ingredients, the aromas and flavors that
form the foundation of the wine: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and--for its
intriguing floral/tropical character--Muscat Canelli. Then, from our
"spice cabinet," we added small amounts of Sémillon and Viognier. Already,
we were working with flavors and textures that formed a new and
unprecedented combination--a conundrum, or puzzle to be teased out by the
taster.

Caymus 2002 Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley, California
In this vintage, the combination that showed what I consider the best
characteristics of the vintage for Cabernet—rich yet rounded, extracted
yet fully evolved, immediately appealing yet full of promise for the
future—came from our estate vineyard in Rutherford and two other valley
floor vineyards where we have given very close attention to viticulture
choices that boost fruit intensity, especially clonal selection and vine
density, in recent years.
