Blackstone
Wines
When it comes to sharing the Blackstone experience, its quite rewarding to find an elusive bottle of our Napa Valley Reserve Merlot or to pick up a limited release Malvasia Bianca from our tasting room. If you can't make it to Monterey or Sonoma
the Blackstone Wine Store is always open. 2002 was a cool year, with heat spikes in late August and early September. The cool growing season produced excellent quality and dark color. The Oak Knoll area is unquestionably one of the best places in Napa Valley to grow merlot grapes. Proximity to the San Francisco Bay provides the warm days and fog shrouded mornings for slow and thorough ripening of the fruit.

Blackstone 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County, California
Enjoy this pleasing Cabernet Sauvignon with filet mignon with blue
cheese and walnuts, barbecued tri-tip, creamy pasta dishes or cheeses,
such as Parmesan Reggiano and smoked gouda. The Blackstone 2002 Sonoma
County Cabernet Sauvignon shows aromas and flavors of bright, fresh cherry
with hints of spice, pepper and violets. This is a big, powerful Cabernet,
but the tannins are smooth and round, making it enjoyable now. The wine
has a long, flavor-packed finish.

Blackstone 2002 Napa Merlot (half-bottle) Napa Valley, California
Our Blackstone 2002 Napa Valley Merlot is sourced from distinct microclimates within the cooler southern half of the Napa Valley. Oak Knoll vineyard, located just south of Yountville on the southern end of the Napa Valley, once again provides the lion’s share of fruit for this year’s wine. It is a moderately cool location with well-draining soil; producing fruit with concentrated blackberry flavors. Just northeast of Oak Knoll, Blackstone chooses mountain-based vineyards high above the valley floor.

Blackstone Winery Sonoma
Selecting top quality fruit from vineyards in Sonoma County’s best appellations gives Blackstone its signature fruit-forward style along with backbone and complexity. 2002 was a fantastic growing season for Sonoma County. The Sonoma Valley vineyards provided bright fruit flavors. Grapes from our Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley vineyards provided fullness to the wine while the Sonoma Coast vineyards gave us classic structure and true varietal character. After the grapes were hand-harvested, Blackstone Winemaker Dennis Hill crushed and cold-soaked the grapes for three days to maximize flavor and color extraction. The grapes were pressed just prior to completing fermentation, emphasizing forward fruit characteristics. The wine was then aged in a mix of French (55%), American (40%) and Hungarian (5%) oak barrels for 15 to 20 months.
