The Benzinger Family Winery was founded in 1980 on the slopes of Sonoma Mountain. Their Reserve wines showcase those rare lots discovered in the vineyard or developed in the cellar that receive the highest level of care and emerge as the best of the vintage. Benzinger also produces Benzinger Family wine and the limited production Vineyard Designate wines. At the core of Benzinger Winery are eight, same generation family members committed to managing ever aspect of grape growing and winemaking. The Benziger family of wine includes: Benziger Family, Benziger Reserve, Benziger Single Vineyard and Benziger Sonoma Mountain Estate. The Benziger Family and Reserve wines are sold nationally in fine restaurants and retail shops.

These wines showcase those special properties, including some that are Biodynamically farmed, that yield a wine like no other. They represent the epitome of our "sense of place" winemaking.
Reserve: These Sonoma wines are the ultimate expression of the vintage. They are made barrel-by-barrel and only from select lots which reveal such exemplary character as to be worthy of the Reserve designation.
Family: These wines reflect the diverse regional and varietal personality of Sonoma County through blends of grapes selected from among a long-standing cadre of partner-growers.
Benziger 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon
Vintage 2002 started wet, even before the calendar said it was 2002 - we almost had our seasonal average of rain before the New Year - with January and February being unusually dry and typically cold. We had light rain at the end of March that slowed down budbreak but without causing any major problems. Unsettled weather through spring kept things interesting. More cool weather in May extended bloom, which could have caused uneven ripening. At the end of May we were about two weeks behind 2001. Veraison began in late July, later than average, but earlier than 1998 and 1999. Moving into the final stages of the growing season we were in pretty good shape considering that our summer had been fairly mild. This wine is full-bodied, round, and intensely flavored of cherry, cedar, tobacco, toast, herbs, and blackberry. Enjoy this wine with grilled meats, beef tortillas, BBQ and decadently chocolate desserts.

Vineyard Designation
In an effort to more closely connect wine character with the land on which it is grown, some vintners make wine from a particular vineyard and put that vineyard name on the bottle of wine. Vineyard-designated wines are often limited-production wines of distinct character. You may have heard the French term terroir used to describe a particular vineyard or growing area. While there is no literal translation, essentially it means the soil, which many consider to be the most influential determinant of winegrape flavor.
