Torbreck Wines
Torbreck, founded in 1994 by David Powell, is situated at Marananga on the western ridge of the Barossa. Low yielding, old and dry grown Barossa Valley vineyards are the cornerstone of Torbreck Vintners where traditional, manual winemaking methods and minimal intervention are combined to produce a variety of wines each year. The growers we work with have been selected for their unique vineyard sites and spartan approach to viticulture - Torbreck wines are concentrated in the vineyards, not in the winery. Our website enables you to discover all of our wines and the vineyards that give them life. Since that time he has produced some of the world's finest 'Rhone varietal' wines, exclusively from Barossa fruit; this has been acknowledged by the wine press in Europe, America and Australia. The overwhelming majority of his vines are dry-grown, nearly all are 80 - 125 years old and are tended and harvested by hand.
The History of Torbreck Vintners
The Torbreck endeavour is based around the classic Barossa Valley varietals of Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro, and a love for the wines of France's Rhone Valley. Dave loves the intense, rich, Rhone-like flavours that come from old-vines and the fact that Shiraz and Grenache are the mainstay red grapes of the Northern and Southern Rhone often draws comparison. Torbreck doesn't only make red wines though, we have Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne planted on our winery block which we have blended to make a white wine for the last 2 years.
In July 2002 the historic Hillside property was acquired by Torbreck. Situated in Lyndoch, it is one of the original Barossa properties. Vast and picturesque it contains some magnificent old and ancient vineyards that will further our source of premium quality fruit. The Hillside property contains a wonderful native ecosystem that supports a myriad of flora and fauna. Dave hopes to turn it into a nature reserve in the future that will be open to visits.
Torbreck The Struie Barossa Valley 2004
Torbreck Barossa Valley The Struie Shiraz 2004
One thing about Torbreck is that they really know how to lay the complexity on thick. This is a
carnival of a wine. Cinnamon, florals, meat, plum, game, toast, rubber, black pepper, cedar – no kidding, it’s all here, and it’s all very showy too. It’s a beautifully weighted, sweet-sour wine with an extra dimension of roasted-aniseed, rum-and-raisin swinging right through it – there is no doubt that this wine flies pretty close to the edge, and that’s what I love about it. It works. Give it at least half an hour in the decanter before drinking it. And then settle back and be seduced – this is a great Barossa Valley/Eden Valley shiraz.

Barossa Valley
Barossa is red-wine territory, with red grapes consisting of about two-thirds of the region's plantings. The reds are lauded for their rich, concentrated flavors and aging potential. Home to the vineyards that produced the first Penfolds Grange, Barossa wines are consistent – the weather is reliable and so vintage variation is rare. Whites are also found, mainly from the Semillon grape – these wines are as full-bodied as the reds although harder to find. |

Torbreck 2004 The Factor Shiraz
Barossa Valley, Australia
Made from 100% Shiraz that spent 24 months in French oak (30% new), the exuberant, flamboyant 2004 The Factor offers up gorgeously pure blueberry and blackberry fruit intermixed with smoke, bacon fat, camphor, and graphite. Silky smooth, and, as David Powell says, “the most Barossa-like” of all his wines, it represents Powell’s rendition of a Cote Rotie.
