Pirramimma Wines
Pirramimma was founded by Alexander Campbell Johnston in 1892 and has been owned and operated by the Johnston family ever since.
The Pirramimma Winery is located just a short distance south of the small township of McLaren Vale, about 40 kilometres south of Adelaide, the capital of South Australia. The Johnston family arrived in South Australia in 1839 and in 1892 Alexander, the tenth of thirteen children, purchased 97 hectares of rich farmland southeast of the then fledgling village of McLaren Vale. He named his land Pirramimma, an Aboriginal phrase meaning "the moon and the stars".
Winemaking at Pirramimma
Winemaking at Pirramimma has been a family affair for well over 100 years and is now in the very capable hands of Alex and Geoff Johnston, grandsons of the winery's founder.
Under their guidance, Pirramimma has seen many significant changes, including the construction of a 3100 square
meter naturally cooled rammed earth barrel storage facility, and the expansion of the land holdings from 97 hectares to 250 hectares, 180 of which are now planted to grapes.
Geoff is a winemaker with a world perspective. He is graduate of the Charles Sturt University and studied in France where his strong interest in the classic Bordeaux grape variety, Petit Verdot, first developed.
McLaren Vale
McLaren Vale was named after David McLaren, the Colonial Manager of the South Australia Company who arrived in the colony in 1837 and left in 1840. In 1841, John Reynell planted 500 vine cuttings near the present township of Reynella.
The region consistency produces fine wines from a number of varieties, most importantly Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
Only a half hours drive South of Adelaide is one of Australia’s oldest winemaking regions. Driving over the first row of hills one is met with a vista of undulating vineyards surrounding pretty townships, the backdrop the wave-like South Lofty Ranges rolling to the sea.

Pirramimma Shiraz McLaren Vale 2003, Australia
Pirramimma has long held an enviable reputation for the quality and full bodied richness of its estate grown Shiraz.
The grapes for this flagship wine – concentrated, classic McLaren Vale Shiraz - are grown on Stock’s Hill, the most elevated vineyard on the Pirramimma Estate.
Maturation is completed in selected oak barrels – the combination of premium fruit and mature wood producing a wine of outstanding complexity.
Tasting Notes:
Matured in American Oak for 12 months prior to bottling, this 2003 release shows lifted spice and pepper varietal Shiraz fruit together with sweet vanillin oak. The palate is dominated by rich spicy fruits and has a generous soft tannin finish. |
