Penfolds, the first name that comes to mind when you think about Australian wine, was founded by a young English doctor who migrated to one of his country's most distant colonies a century and a half ago. Dr Penfold built up his medical practice and made fortified wines - port and sherry - for his patients. As the demand for his wine grew he expanded the vineyards and increased production. At some stage in the 1850's, wine probably took over from medicine as the family's chief source of income.
The fame of Grange and Penfold's other leading reds has tended to overshadow more recent success with white wines, though this trend is beginning to change. Recent local and international wine show awards for Penfolds whites show that the winemakers' determination to match the reds is paying dividends. Penfolds has been owned by the Foster's Group since 2005, Penfolds is possibly Australia's most famous wine label and is home to Australia's most esteemed red wine, Penfolds Grange.
GRANGE. From humble beginnings in the 1950s, Grange has maintained its place as Australia's most prestigious red wine over four decades. Today, it is a wine of international renown, with each vintage eagerly awaited by collectors both in Australia and overseas.
Wine Spectator magazine named the 1990 vintage Grange 'The Best Red Wine in the World'.
Commonly referred to as "the poor man's Grange" due to the use of former Grange barrels in its maturation, and its age old reputation for value for money.
