Greg Norman Estates
Greg Norman's love of golf, Australia and his family is well documented. His love for premium Australian wines isn't as well known, but certainly well developed. Fine wine is one of my great passions, and Australian wine in particular.
His passion and curiosity led him to launch Greg Norman Australia Estates, a collection of wines from
his native Australia. This love of Australian wines resulted in a joint venture with Beringer Blass. In conjunction with Beringer Blass chief Winemaker, Chris Hatcher, Norman personally selected wines from premium vineyards in Coonawarra and the Yarra Valley. He recognized the strengths of both the regions and chose wines that reflected these.
Greg Norman's Wine Preferences
Greg Norman was first introduced to wine and the appreciation of a good bottle of wine back in the 70s when
he started playing professional golf in Europe. he would frequently enjoy a bottle of wine with dinner and since
he was playing a great deal of golf in France at the time, they favored French wine. While in Australia,
he did try many Aussie wines, but they were not nearly as popular as they are today.
He drank Californian wine very infrequently, as he was not a regular in the States. Many people assume that
he prefer Australian wine above all others, because that is where Greg Norman Estates originated, but it isn't true. Now, however, it seems all
he drink are varietals from Australia or California, as he tend to enjoy their qualities better than wines from other countries. One of
his favorite wines is the Australian Reserve Shiraz. It has such a deep, intense flavor, filled with tannins that are pronounced but not overbearing, and a hint of blueberry.
Limestone Coast Cabernet Merlot
The individual vineyard parcels of fruit were harvested then fermented separately in roto and static fermenters. The juice was pumped over the skins to extract the rich colors and flavors from the skins. The wine was pressed off the skins and a select portion racked into seasoned and new French and American oak for maturation prior to blending and bottling.
The fruit for this wine was sourced from vineyards in Padthaway, Wrattonbully and the legendary Coonawarra region in South Australia, which has become famous for its wines made from vineyards grown on rich red soils overlying hard limestone rock. The 2002 vintage was exceptional. The cool vintage ensured that the fruit developed intense varietal fruit characters, elegant tannins and firm structure.

Limestone Coast
Australia's Limestone Coast landscape was once the ancient seabed of the Southern Ocean. The mild climate is like that of Bordeaux. It encompasses the regions of Coonawarra, Padthaway and Wrattonbully. Much of the Limestone Coast region, recently adopted name for the region in the southeast of South
Australia, is low-lying, and was inundated by sea as recently as 2 million years ago. It had previously also been flooded 15–20 million years ago. There are deep limestone deposits created form the coral and other sealife. |

Greg Norman Estates Limestone Coast Cabernet Merlot 2003
This 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot is a bright ruby red in color. Vibrant and complex aromas of spicy, red berry fruit, red currant, sweet cherry and cranberries preface notes of varietal, leafy blackcurrant fruit, cinnamon and clove spice. The wine is beautifully structured with soft, velvety tannins, balanced acid and abundant, bright, sweet fruit on the finish.
