Scientists may have discovered the reason why red wine appears
to protect the heart. Numerous studies have suggested that moderate alcohol
drinking helps to reduce the likelihood of heart disease. "If you consume one
glass of red wine and you have a good absorption of the active principle, that
would be more than adequate." Cabernet Sauvignon-derived wines seemed to have
the most impact.

Cabernet Sauvignon
Cabernet Sauvignon is the king of all red wine grapes. It is grown in all major
wine producing countries, but in California it seems to garner the highest
honors. Although the grape has great attributes, it excels when blended with
other grapes, usually Merlot and Cabernet Franc as done in Bordeaux.

Merlot
The popularity of Merlot is in due large part by the ease of pronunciation of
the grape as well as the ease on the palate of the grape. Merlot tends to be
rather soft and fruity with very slight tannins. The wine does not require
extended bottle age which also is added bonus especially for consumers who do
not have a wine cellar.

Pinot Noir
A wine for sensualists. Makes the great reds of
Burgundy and good wines from California and Oregon. More delicate than
Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot, with strawberry and tea-leaf aromas and
flavors, excellent with grilled salmon, roast chicken and grilled lamb.

Sangiovese
Sangiovese is to Chianti as cabernet sauvignon is to Bordeaux. Both form the
base of wines normally blended with other varietals and both by themselves share
a certain distinctive elegance and complexity, when well-made. Sangiovese’s high
acidity allows it to pair well with many food choices, it is fabulous with
tomato-based pastas and pizzas.

Syrah / Shiraz
Very successful in France's
Rhone Valley with such legendary wines as Cote-Rotie and
Hermitage and Australia, where it is known as Shiraz. A hearty,
spicy red. Wonderfully wild black-fruit aromas and flavors, with
overtones of black pepper spice and roasting meat, great with
steak, beef and stews.

Zinfandel
Zinfandel is an important grape variety grown in California that
is used to produce robust red wine as well as very popular
"blush wines". The most versatile wine grape, beaujolais-style
reds, rich, heavy-reds with zesty, berryish flavor that perfect
for tomato-sauce pasta, pizza, and grilled meats.

Red Wine Gifts
A gift well received any time of the year. A handsome, reusable,
wood crate packed with one, two or three bottles of wine. The red wines of Italy are hugely varied. Italy is in many ways even
better suited for the vine than is France. From the Alps to the boot,
Italy is one long ridge of mountains with coasts on either side, and vines
love this.
