From Chateau Recougne, the 2001 Bordeaux Superieur is a first class wine. The aroma and flavor meld together to create a wine that finishes with ripe textured tannins that linger. Chateau Recougne is home to Mrs. Hélène Milhade. The vineyards surround the Chateau and the winemaking facilities, which were classified under the Fronsac Appellation many years ago. Merlot is best suited to the terroir and is the majority planting, complemented by both Cabernets. Factors that contribute to the quality of the vineyard include : several parcels of very old vines (50 years), environmentally friendly viticultural techniques, low yields through green harvesting and excellent canopy management.

Cabernet Sauvignon
The principal grape in many Bordeaux wines, it is grown in most of the world's wine regions, although it requires a long growing season to ripen properly and gives low yields. Cabernet Sauvignon has a well defined aroma. In Old World wines, particularly those made in Bordeaux, this is characterized by a smell of violets, blackcurrant, cedar and spice. Although Cabernet Sauvignon will more often than not be the biggest single variety in the top Bordelais wines, its overall use is usually no more than 50 percent of the wine.

Merlot
The earliest recorded mention of Merlot was in the notes of a local Bordeaux official who in 1784 labeled wine made from the grape in the Libournais region as one of the area's best. The wine makers of Château Pétrus favor early picking to best maintain the wine's acidity and finesse as well as its potential for aging. Merlot-based wines usually have medium body with hints of berry, plum, and currant. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot an ideal grape to blend with Cabernet Sauvignon.
